Writer/Director: Kate Ascott-Evans
Kate grew up in South Africa and is a graduate of The Stella Adler Conservatory program in Los Angeles. She is a regular contributor to the hit NPR storytelling show “Snap Judgment” and has toured nationally with the show. “Glimmer Train” recently selected her short fiction as one of their 25 top short stories by new writers. Learning from a range of international directors, Kate assisted Athol Fugard on the world premiere of The Train Driver and attended The Actors Studio Playwright/Director unit under the mentorship of Lyle Kessler and Mark Rydell. Kate has worked extensively with young actors, coaching them for film, TV and theatre. The story of SHOSHANNAH’S SKATEBOARD was inspired by the experience of directing a group of Orthodox Jewish teens in a play. Kate currently lives between London and LA. She wishes she could skate.
Shoshannah: Nili Rain Segal
Nili was born in Watsonville, California where she grew up performing in local and nearby theater groups; a passion which developed through numerous years of performing and competing as a figure skater. She was inspired to pursue her passion on a professional level after seeing the musical Wicked in San Francisco on a school field trip. At age seventeen, Nili moved to New York to attend the AMDA College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts. She later transferred to AMDA’s Los Angeles campus where she earned her BFA in Music Theater. Since then, she has appeared in several indie films and short plays within the Los Angeles area. When not acting, Nili works as a freelance research assistant in commercial production. She enjoys the outdoors, baking cookies, and raising tarantulas. Nili is grateful for all that the character of Shoshanna has taught her and for Writer/Director Kate Ascott-Evans’ passionate guidance. She also thanks her family for their endless support; without which she would not be where she is today.
